Philadelphia Folk Festival

The 55th Annual Philadelphia Folk Festival

The 55th Annual Philadelphia Folk Festival will be taking over Old Pool Farm in Schwenksville, PA, starting today, and a lot of hot, sweaty folkies will be camping out there, having a good ole time through the weekend. Now, this time of year is always bittersweet for me as it unfortunately has become a reminder of the passing of my old friend, insane percussionionist, helluva good dude and surprisingly decent rapper, Dante Bucci; however, I can't help but feel joy about something that he loved so very much continuing on.

We featured a young up-and-comer in our previous post Dena Miller, who goes by the moniker Deer Scout. If you are already planning the early trek out to the farm tonight to catch Quiet Life, whose new album was produced by Dr. Dog's Scott McMicken, then you'll be missing her bill this evening with Kississippi at PhilaMOCA; however, early risers can find Miller strumming away tomorrow morning at the Front Porch Stage. She'll be joined in the "NEXT GEN FOLK" slot by Jason McCue. His oddball take on the world and lyrics produces songs that just might shake things up at the relatively mellow weekend. The End of America, Jeremiah Tall, Hurricane Hoss, and Heart Harbor are also other local area artists that you might want to catch. And by now, we hope that you've received the memo that The Lone Bellow are not to be missed. You can check out the rest of the Philly Folk Fest schedule HERE. The 53rd Annual Philadelphia Folk Festival

The 53rd Annual Philadelphia Folk Festival kicks into high gear today, and will sustain itself on a premium blend of high-quality tunes and positive vibes throughout the weekend. This year’s lineup, once again, provides a mixture of locally cultivated talent while also displaying touring acts. For those looking for a taste of local flavor, a wide assortment is at your disposal including: Kwesi K, Mutlu, Katie Frank & The Pheromones, The Wallace Brothers, and many more. Friday afternoon’s Philadelphia Music Co-Op Showcase features the likes of Vulcans, Kalob Griffin Band, and Black Horse Motel, among others, offering a solid sampling of our continuously growing folk/roots community. Reverend TJ McGlinchey will be holding a ukulele workshop were fellow Lover’s League member Dani Mari may be singing along. All this with a solid musical dose that also includes the soulful blues explosion of Shemekia Copeland, the funky get-down groove-making Rebirth Brass Band, and the legendary Loudon Wainwright III, buzzing Sturgill Simpson, and Deli faves The Lone Bellow, and Old Crow Medicine Show, just to name a few. The 52nd Annual Philadelphia Folk Festival at Old Pool Farm Aug. 15 - 18

The 52nd Annual Philadelphia Folk Festival is getting ready to kick things off this evening. Though there aren’t any local acts slated on the bill tonight, the event’s diehard fans shouldn’t miss Nashville’s Luella & the Sun, an act that should be performing on plenty of big stages someday if the rock gods are just. Some acts that will be representing our beloved music community you should be looking out for this weekend are The Lawsuits (whose upcoming album sounds like it will be their best recordings yet), Toy Soldiers (getting warmed up for their album release party in September), Ursula Rucker, Todd Rundgren, Marc Silver and The Stonethrowers, Reverend TJ McGlinchey, and Dani Mari - plus many more. You can view the full schedule for the fest HERE. And if you’re planning to camp out, remember to bring some warm clothing (according to reports, last night was chilly). Philadelphia Folk Festival Lineup Announced

The Philadelphia Folk Festival committee announced at Johnny Brenda’s yesterday this year’s lineup for its 51st annual event that will be taking place on August 17 - 19 at the Old Pool Farm in Upper Salford Township, near Schwenksville, PA. Locals that you should set aside time during the weekend to catch are Strand of Oaks a.k.a. Tim Showalter (it should be interesting to see if he’ll be picking up the guitar again or giving the diehard folkies a taste of the synths that he’s mentioned being obsessed about lately), Chris Kasper and Griz. We were treated to sets by the latter two at yesterday’s announcement. National touring artists like Wanda Jackson, Steve Earle and the Dukes, Little Feat, The Wooden Sky, City & Colours, Arborea, Chris Bathgate and many more will anchor down the weekend. Individual daily tickets start at $52.00, including the 20% Early Bird Discount, or you can attend all three days for $116.00. Add in tent camping and you get an additional concert on Thursday night for a total of $156.00. You can purchase your tickets as well as view the rest of the festival’s lineup and info HERE
