The ladies over at Hypnocraft certainly got us hypnotized with this weekends lineup for the upcoming appointment of The Hum (the weekly, female-artists-only, collab night that The Deli sponsors) and it’s definitely not the first time., since it's showcasing mostly local artists we ourselves love and have covered in this very blog.

At this week’s show on Sunday (4.10) the first pair kicking off the night is Casey Dienel (White Hinterland) alongside the lovely and talented ladies of Gracie & Rachel. With beautiful vocals and a keen ear for strong melodies we can almost hear the entrancing, orchestral performance from these gals already. Followed by Julia Easterlin and Hannah Epperson we can already hear a track built up solely by vocal loops and smooth violin chords, something sweet to get us dreaming. For the final performance we can expect to be enticed by solid drum progressions and synth ambiance courtesy of Dani Markham (Tune-Yards), Maia Friedman (UNI IKA AI) & K. Marie Kim (BLANK PAPER).

So stroll on over to Manhattan Inn this Sunday, April 10, for some some great performances in a cozy and intimate environment!

Monday October 26th marks the last appointment with the Deli Sponsored, collaborative series The Hum at Greeinpoint's Manhattan Inn, featuring several talented female NYC musicians, collaborating with each other on new material.

Monday will see a heck of a lot of talent, starting with amazing, mesmerizing guitarist Kaki King, accompanied on drums by Kiran Gandhi of Madame Gandhi. Following up, a three way collaboration between experimental violinist Jeanann Dara, singer Katie Von Schleicher of mellow rootsy quintet Wilder Maker and out of control noise rock DIY artist Rose Blanshei of Prima - this one promises sparkles. The night will end with three more women on stage: soulful singer Alisha Roney of Feathers+Eyes, classic soul singer Amy Leon and Bridget Kearney from wonderful folk rock band Lake Street Dive.

This is going to be a great night of music, see you there, there will be a lot of Deli mags for you to read in between performances!

We certainly have an affinity with the gals at Hypnocraft (who organize the Deli sponsored weekly, collaborative, female-artist-only nights called The Hum) since they keep booking musicians involved with bands we love, many of whom we featured on our rag's cover in the past. The upcoming event, scheduled for Monday 10.19, features a particularly intriguing line up. 

The first collaboration will see extraordinary one-woman-band Emily Wells (whom we booked years ago for a fantastic BK Bazaar show) collaborate with atmospheric electronic artist Lorna Dune; expect a lot of electronic instrumentation laying around, and some looping of acoustic instruments. After this duo, a quartet of ladies will take the stage: Kristin Slipp (Cuddle Magic), Rosana Caban (Psychic Twin), Angelica Bess (Body Language), and Becca Kauffman (Ava Luna) - the latter two were featured with their bands on the cover of past issues of The Deli; a lot of really good vocalists in this group, we would be surprised if we didn't witness some three way harmonizing at some point during the set... The final show will mix things up big time, with a jazz flavor brought by saxophonist Hailey Niswanger and xylophonist Nikara Warren, and Hip Hop vocals courtesy of rapper L.atasha A.lcindor AKA L.A. and soulful singer Katie Jones.

Get ready for a new, comfy night of NYC lady-made music, this upcoming Monday October 12 at Greenpoint's Manhattan Inn. For the un-initiated, the Deli-sponsored series (organized by Hypnocraft) is called "The Hum" and features female NYC musicians in a collaborative setting. On Monday you'll see in action one of our favorite NYC singer songwriters, Tamsin Wilson of the band Wilsen, who graced the cover of our NYC magazine back in 2013. Tamsin will be performing a set with singer, actress & dancer Katrina Cunningham and (in normal circumstances) one-woman-band Idgy Dean.

The second set will involve two Latinas from bands who also got recent love from us, both in print and online: Gabi Jimeno, drummer of Balancer, and Juliana Ronderos, singer of Salt Cathedral. Yo, Balancer will also be playing at our CMJ Pop Stage on the following Saturday, BE THERE!!!

The third set, quite appropriately curated by Tom Tom Magazine (a rag entirely focused on female drummers), will feature Mindy Abovitz (Chica Vas, Taigaa), Mickey Vershbow (Mal Blum), Cati Bestard (Doble Pletina), and Maia Macdonald (Mirah). With 50% of the musicians on stage being drummers, you can expect a rather percussive performance!

Intimate shows in living room (or other comfortable small spaces not strictly set up to host live music) are gaining steam these days - and not only in NYC. In Brooklyn, Hypnocraft has booked several shows for series held at the cozy (as in charmingly small) Manhattan Inn restaurant in Greenpoint. Gone are the old-school pianists entertaining diners with watered down cover songs, replaced by respected local artists like Sam Cohen and Shilpa Ray playing songs from their original repertoire. Crowds are often so reverent you can hear a pin drop. Hypno’s second series is called “The Hum.” Its mission, says founder Rachael Pazdan, “is to connect a diverse community of women making music in New York City.” Those words couldn't fall on deaf ears here at The Deli, therefore, we decided to sponsor these events!

On The Hum's first night this upcoming Monday (10.05) half a dozen of talented local ladies will grace the stage of the Manhattan Inn - we are particularly excited because the majority of them has received generous coverage in this very blog. Being a collaborative night, the performances are organized in couples: accomplished singer-songwriter Larkin Grimm (previously a member of Dirty Projectors) will perform together with drummer Lia Simone (ex drummer for The Butcherettes and Gothic Tropic). Mercurial singer and composer Alena Spanger of Tiny Hazard (a band we celebrated in 2013 with a "Deli NYC Video of the Month") will surely try something quirky during her shared performance with dreamy folksinger Adrianne Lenker of Big Thief. After them, we should expect some electronic instruments on stage, when Nandi Rose Plunkett of Half Waif and Johanna Cranitch of White Prism will join forces (and their beautiful voices) to entertain us.
