Record of the Month: Half Waif - ‘Lavender’

Nandi Rose Plunkett’s singing is deliberate. Her voice moves slowly, with seeming ease, as if each line is a response in real time, never rushed but carefully thought out and confident. The music Plunkett makes under the Half Waif moniker is equally precise, particularly on the group’s latest album, Lavender. Though often meditative in its ambience and melodic complexities, Half Waif flexes a knowledge of pop that brings the music to sweeping highs. Throughout, Plunkett contemplates womanhood and the distance accompanied by travel, perhaps best summarized in the opening track’s description of a visit with her grandmother. Both musically and lyrically, Lavender makes for a thoroughly engaging and ambitious addition to the Half Waif catalog. – Cameron Carr
Half Waif tours with Pinegrove + plays Market Hotel on 08.06

With her latest project, Half Waif's Nandi Rose Plunkett has successfully bridged the ever-growing chasm between "avant" and pop, taking Radiohead's lesson to a more intimate and less pretentious place. The band's sophomore album 'Probable Depths" is an intriguing blend of synth and orchestral pop full of texture and otherworldly melodies. Half Waif will be back in Brooklyn performing as a trio on June 6th at the Market Hotel, to the end of their ongoing tour throughout the US. —Henry Solotaroff-Webber

Half Waif celebrate release of "Probable Depths" LP at Baby's All Right on 05.12

Combining pop sensibilities with the classical textures of violins and twinkling pianos, Brooklyn’s beguiling trio, Half Waif, sends un on a dazzling journey in her album Probable Depths - which we had the chance to preview, or rather, pre-hear. With swelling vocals, billowing synths, and blinking electronic melodies that lull us into a dream, the album is both achingly private and daringly open, as if each song was a stolen glance into Plunkett’s sonic world, each painting an acutely fine and deliberate stroke of her emotive life. A mellifluous pirouette of musical resplendence, Half Waif’s Probable Depths is an aural triumph set to be released on May 6. Half Waif announces LP "Probable Depths" + unveils single "Nest"

Brainchild of Brooklyn singer songwriter/producer Nandi Rose Plunkett, Half Waif incarnates the paradox - made possible by modern technology - of the solo orchestral project. In control of lyrics and vocals, Nandi also forges the band's lush electronic arrangements, partly delegating the rhythm section to drummer Zack Levine and bassist Adan Carlo. Half Waif - who made our Best of NYC Poll for Emerging bands back in 2013 - just announced the release of their sophomore LP "Probable Depths" by unveiling single "Nest" (streaming). Before the release, scheduled for an April 2016 release, the trio will be performing at Shea Stadium on January 6 with Shana Falana, Fraternal Twin, and Ajnabi.
