The Fantastic Imagination

The Fantastic Imagination Opening for Francisco The Man at Boot & Saddle Feb. 17

When The Fantastic Imagination promoted their final show last year, they mentioned that it would be the "last time" the group would be performing "in a while," which felt like very bad news for the band to me. Well, I'm happy to learn that the brief hiatus was actually to work on some new material. The Fantastic Imagination recently shared a track entitled "Slack Ghosts Get Stoned" to remind us "how weird" they are. Weird - maybe, but with the release of the group's best recording to date, it also reminded me of the band's serious creative potential. Check it out below! And catch them this evening at Boot & Saddle opening Francisco The Man. Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8pm, $10, 21+ (Photo by Ben Morgan) - H.M. Kauffman

The Fantastic Imagination Hosting So Cow at Silk City Sept. 21

It seems that the fantastical journey of The Fantastic Imagination might be nearing an end. The band posted on its Facebook page: "Come see us play for the last time in a while." The Fantastic Imagination will be performing this evening at Silk City alongside the siren-esque soundscapes of Myrrias. They'll be hosting a rare appearance by Irish noise-pop crew So Cow. I doubt that you'll find a better place to be this Sunday night. Silk City, 435 Spring Garden St., $7, 21+ - H.M. Kauffman

Tender Vision and The Fantastic Imagination hit The Pharmacy April 12th

Tonight get ready for a long night of live music at The Pharmacy, Philly's freshest coffee shop west of the Broad Street line. Headlining the night is Tender Vision, the indie poppers with a flair for the vaguely sad. Kings of the DIY circuit with a new album on the way, ex-Catnaps frontwoman Adrianne Gold and bassist William Sallee miss the Pixies just as much as the next guy, but you didn’t write a song about it. Starting the evening off is the six-member folk band, The Fantastic Imagination. Self-described as “psychedelic fantasy,” the band hones in on precise acoustic riffs and piles on edgy distortion and vocal harmonies for a romantic and almost medieval effect. Next up is the shoegazey husband and wife duo Overly Polite Tornadoes from Kalamazoo, and another husband and wife project from New York, Trifles. The Pharmacy, 1300/02 S. 18th St.,8pm, $5-7 –Maggie Grabmeier

Weekend Warrior, March 28-30

The glitter-rock of newcomers Likers is contagious and thrilling. The bands sound is unhinged at times, but the production is quite slick. Their debut EP “Men Of Honor”, which came out earlier this year, is brimming with promise. They take a page from bands like The Replacements and The Clash while cashing in on their youthful energy. Joining them is The Fantastic Imagination, a lush psychedelic folk project. Their layered production and vocals makes each song bloom into its own. Filling out the bill are two Long Island bands, Broadcaster and American Hellfire Club.  All of this is going down at The Golden Tea House on Saturday.  But as always, there are tons of other options too.
