Dark Tea celebrates debut folk-pop LP at Union Pool 03.22

Songwriters working in Americana have to find a tough balance between influence and innovation, and Dark Tea’s Gary Canino does just that on his self titled debut LP. It’s almost impossible not to conjure Paul Simon and Elliott Smith (or the Lemonhead cover of "Mrs. Robinson") when listening to the album’s first single “Rolling Back The Dial”, but Canino is blessed with an ear for the unconventional, which allows him to forge melodies that are never banal in their deceptive simplicity. This is songwriting at its finest, and a fitting introduction to a truly versatile artist. Dark Tea will be celebrating the release of their forthcoming album at Union Pool on March 22nd - listen to “Rolling Back The Dial” below. - Sunny Betz

Dark Tea plays tape release show 04.01 at The Glove

The music of Dark Tea has all the intimacy of lo-fi bedroom recordings—acoustic guitar, casio keyboards, near whispered vocals—but manages to present it with the smooth sentimentality of folk. Gary Canino, the songwriter behind the project, weaves elements from the worlds of indie rock and twangy Americana together into delicate arrangements. The songs gain added emphasis from Canino’s choice to use accents sparingly, only occasionally letting in pedal steel guitar, a guest vocal harmony, or wash of keyboard. With a new tape on the way, Dark Tea will play a release show at The Glove on April 1st before embarking on a west coast tour. Though there are few details about the release, we’re hopeful this isn’t just an April Fool’s prank, get to the show to find out. – Cameron Carr

Dark Tea plays Baby's All Right on 02.15

The side project of Gary Canino of the band RipsDark Tea plays a brand of introverted folk-pop that blends the soothing simplicity of The Shins with the playfulness of some of Syd Barrett solo albums. 'Providence Sky,' featuring the sugar-coated addition of Alexandra Savior's vocals, is their only truly finalized track to date, but sounds very promising to our ears - stream it below. You can check out a bunch of demos on their Soundcloud profile, and see the band live at Baby's All Right on February 15th.
