Best of NYC 2014 - Deli Writers top picks: Celestial Shore, Beverly, Sons of an Illustrious Father, and Dead Stars

Deli-rious readers,

In the insanely convoluted (but SUPERBLY accurate) system governing our Year End Poll for Emerging NYC Artist, our writers have a rather influential vote. Here are the results of this specific poll.

Well... you should know by know how much The Deli's staff loves avant-indie trio Celestial Shore, so I guess no surprise there! Check out their latest awesome video below. Beverly, Sons of an Illustrious Father and Dead Stars also made an impression...

Best of CMJ 2014: NYC's Celestial Shore - live at Shae Stadium on 11.12

From JP's report of Day 2 of the CMJ Music Marathon 2014. " By the time Celestial Shore played, I was drunk again. Goddamnit. But my ears were reinvigorated with fuzz. Finally. It was about time. I was nervous I’d drown in all this clean delay and organized keys. A clean channel came through the set, but their haze and grit made it so that I couldn’t attentively hear anything else. Guitar parts were sporadic, yet cohesive—a chaos that made sense, almost like a grunge-pop. Soft vocals offset the sludge tones, breathing life into the room. It was fun to watch, if only to see their drummer have himself a time on that crash cymbal. It seemed like every time he hit it, a smile would grow on his face. Some of the songs may very well have been written solely around an insane drum solo, but who cared? There was a slow jam thrown in there (maybe the streaming "Die For Us"?), which had a sudden, jolting tempo change. The last song was bluesy and cool, fading out real nice with the singer/guitarist noisily riffing his guitar frets on his mic stand, which was neat. Yeah, neat. " - Celestial Shore plays Shea Stadium on 11.12 with Leapling and Cave Cricket.

JP's CMJ 2014 Day 2: Caveman, Wampire, Splashh, Celestial Shore, J Ferdinand, Icewater, Ronald Paris, Future Punx

I had a bit of a late start today. I slept through three alarms, and when I finally did wake up, I felt like I had cement running through my veins. Sore, hungover, out of it. It was well past noon and I had wanted, or planned, already to be caffeinated, at a show, and to have had my day 1 recap written; not to be standing over a stove reheating the chicken over rice with white sauce I’d impulsively gotten at 4am. Sonofabitch. I shot over (and by shot, I very much mean moseyed) to Cake Shop for the Terrorbird showcase. Clearly it had been underway a good amount. Between eating godawful leftovers, writing up yesterday’s happenings, crawling into a shower and then crawling to the coffee shop, it was something like 4pm! It’s a terrible feeling when it’s the first time you’re stepping outside for the day, and you can see that the sun’s already starting to go down. Keep Reading JP Basileo's CMJ 2014 Day 2 report.

Jake's CMJ Day 1: The Sediment Club, Guerrilla Toss, Roomrunner, Celestial Shore

Since it was my first CMJ, I didn't know what to expect in the beginning. As it got closer to the week I slowly began to realize that it's more corporate than I expected. I don't really know that much or care about any of the industry events or any of the 'big' shows, so I'm going to seek out as many great bills as I can and go from there. I will say that despite my grievances against the corporate shmuck-holes, my first CMJ night was pretty good; I saws four great bands consecutively at two venues and honestly, couldn't have been happier. - Read More

Stream the First Single Off Celestial Shore's Forthcoming Album

Celestial Shore, Brooklyn's masters of syncopation and tempo changes who graced the cover of The Deli's 2013 Summer Issue, are out with another monster of a song, entitled 'Gloria'. We must say we're quite surprised by this new single for a couple reasons: 1. It's a little more straight forward than most tracks by the trio, which is actually good - we even hear a bit of a Pixies influence! 2. The entire song doesn't seem to feature any odd time signatures - although (for the math rock nerds) there's plenty of switching between 4 quarters and 6 quarters. Dissecting Celestial Shore's songs is only part of the fun, because their melodies are something bordering on heavenly, and this track's graceful regression to simplicity allows for a full appreciacion of the actual song.  This tune, together with new material they performed at our recent NYC B.E.A.F. show, has amped us up for their sophomore full-length, 'Enter Ghost,' to be released this October.  You have a couple chances to see Celestial Shore this week, one at the Landlady release show tonight at Baby's All Right, and again this Sunday at the secret house show which is part of the 1.21 Gigawatts Festival (the catch is that you need to have a full weekend pass to go this show, but it'll be worth it). - Jake Saunders
