Broken Beak

Broken Beak Record Release Show at PhilaMOCA Aug. 19

Melancholy and dissonance merge with post-punk rhythms and an almost folk sense of lyricism to produce songs that grab you by the scruff of your neck and force you to listen. There is an honesty and abrasion that are both beautiful and haunting, which endures from the opening acoustic plucks and kitchen-sink noises to fading strums and a grinding halt on Broken Beak’s new release, Some Nerve. Beau Brynes, along with bandmates Brendan Lukens (Modern Baseball), Evan Clark Moorehead (Weller), and Jeff Malt, will be celebrating its release tonight at PhilaMOCA, as part of their 2016 summer tour. They’ll be joined by Portland, OR outfits Blowout, a powerhouse of sound and fury, and Walter etc., a folk-punk collective that is not afraid to have fun, and drag you kicking and screaming along. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 7pm, $8, All Ages - Keith Kelley

New Broken Beak LP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Released via Near Mint, Some Nerve, the new LP from the quartet of Broken Beak, openly exposes fragility while gathering a strength via universal momentum. Beau Brynes's assertive vocals play into the energetic ebb and flow of instrumentation, drawing in and then rushing outward as Brendan Lukens (Modern Baseball), Evan Moorehead (Weller), and Jeff Malt refine the sonic shape. Co-produced by Jake Ewald (Modern Baseball), give the album a spin, and then catch the band tomorrow at The Pharmacy with Pretty Words, Spur, Horse Jumper of Love, and The Island of Misfit Toys.

New Track: "Humble" - Broken Beak

Broken Beak recently shared a brief but exciting new single, called "Humble," at The A.V. Club. The band is led by Beau Brynes, and features guitarwork from Brendan Lukens of Modern Baseball. Lukens's MoBo bandmate Jake Ewald is also producing the group's forthcoming album, Some Nerve, which will be released on July 1 via Near Mint Records. Broken Beak is heading out on tour in August with Chris Farren in support of their new record. (Photo by Emily Dubin)

Weekend Warrior, March 14 - 16

This Weekend Warrior pick - we’re keeping it locals only! Alt-folk five-piece The Hundred Acre Woods have been on the rise, coming up through Philly’s DIY community. They’ll be the headliner and anchor of this Saturday’s showcase at Kung Fu Necktie. The group will be supported by another folk-tinged Deli favorite that we predict good things happening to in the not so distant future, Maitland, electro-rock crew SHMNS, and current Featured Artist(s) Poll Nominee, Broken Beak. Take advantage of your good sense to not be at SXSW this weekend. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $5, 21+ - H.M. Kauffman
