A New Year And New Music From Black Pussy

Along with the New Year comes the inevitible wave of new releases to music listeners ears. One of the first through 2015's freshly opened door is Portland's psychedelically sludgy stoner pop outfit with perhaps the must crude band name in all the land, Black Pussy, who are set to release a sophomore album, Magic Mustache, on February 17 through China Records. Though their new album isn't available in full for another month and a half, they've recently released two singles off of Magic Mustache, one including a brain burner of a music video, for you to wet your whistle on in the meantime. Judging from these new tracks alone, Black Pussy's upcoming album may just blow their now three-year-old debut, On Blond, out of the water. I'm stoked to hear more.

Third Annual Stumpfest: 4.24 - 4.26

This weekend, Portland's loudest and least hipster overrun music festival, Stumpfest, which is returning for it's third year in a row, will be taking over Mississippi Studios. 3-day passes to the metal festival are already sold out, but individual day passes are still a-plenty ($15 in advance, $17 at the door), if you just want to catch one night of music, or don't mind paying for multiple day-passes to catch the whole event.

Featuring many-a-rad Portland based bands, this year's top notch Stumpfest line up is as follows:

Thursday 4.24.14:

Trans Am - joined by: Federation X, Life Coach, Drab Majesty and Hot Victory.

Friday 4.25.14:

Red Fang - joined by: Lord Dying, Norska, Black Pussy, Ancient Warlocks, and Chron Goblin

Saturday 4.26.14:

YOB - joined by: Black Cobra, Diesto, Drunk Dad, and Honduran

Black Pussy Out On The Town.

Humble revivalists marching onto the rock scene with the bold, macho sounds of their debut album 'On Blonde', Black Pussy set themselves aside the hyped-up escalade of musical violence to develop the softer stoner rock aesthetics of the late 60s/early 70s. Amidst hardcore this, trash that and lo-fi everything, surely that's a tricky card to play, right? But having found a right balance between blues-rock basslines, persistent distortion and Dustin Hill's soothing pop voice, the sextet successfully take us right back to the origins of heavy rock & Co, with no pretension to replicate the mindfuck of earlier generations. Wishing you a pleasant 4th of July, I can only suggest a trip to Doug Fir tomorrow evening to check them out! They will also be playing Rontoms & Kelly's Olympian in the next couple of weeks.

PS: Guys, if you go looking for 'em, remember to type in 'band'; you'll get far too distracted if you don't.- Tracy Mamoun
